UBC STARS OF THE WEEK

-

Markus Thormeyer, men’s swimming: The third-year from Delta was dominant in the University of Calgary pool on the weekend, helping the UBC Thunderbirds men’s team to a sixth-straight Canada West title while also being named the male Swimmer of the Meet. Thormeyer won three individual gold medals in the 50-metre backstroke, 400m individual relay and the 200m freestyle, and won two more as a member of the 4x200m and the 4x100m freestyle relays. The science student’s 50m backstroke time of 24.45 also set a new Canada West

record. In addition to his five gold medals, Thormeyer earned a bronze in the 50m butterfly. Thormeyer’s outstanding performance helped the T-Birds beat the host Calgary Dinos by 98.5 points for UBC’s 19th conference banner. Karen Tam, women’s

swimming: With a total of six medals — five of them gold — in Calgary over the weekend, Tam played a massive role in the Thunderbirds capturing their remarkable 10th consecutive Canada West women’s banner. The thirdyear international student from Hong Kong also set two new Canada West records. Tam’s gold-medal performance in the 50m freestyle set a new conference mark in 25.12. She followed that up with a record time of 54.44 in Sunday’s 100m freestyle. In addition to Tam’s five gold medals, she earned a silver in the 100m butterfly. Tam and the Thunderbirds easily won their record 29th Canada West title by 274 points over the host Calgary Dinos. Tyler Sandhu, men’s hockey: The second-year forward had himself a four-point weekend with a goal and three assists as the T-Birds swept the visiting Regina Cougars. The Richmond native is working on a three-game point streak with seven points in his last five games. Sandhu sits in a tie with Maxwell James for the team lead in scoring with 12 points (3-9). The T-Birds have now won four straight games and look to extend their win streak when they host the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday and Saturday in the final weekend of Canada West play before the December exam break. At 9-5, the T-Birds are just one point behind Calgary for third place in the conference at the halfway point of the season.
