Charger’s personal tragedy felt by all

- — John Kryk

FOXBORO, Mass. — That Brendan Mebane even played for the Los Angeles Chargers against New England touched his teammates.

His infant daughter Mekenna had died of a rare chromosome disorder, Trisomy 13, just 10 days earlier. Most such infants die within days or weeks of birth. Mekenna was born Nov. 12.

The 12th-year defensive tackle had missed four of L.A.’s final six games to be with his wife and other children in Nebraska, as Mekenna struggled to survive following delicate surgery to repair a missing heart valve.

The Patriots held a moment of silence for Mekenna before the U.S. anthem.

Mebane had six tackles in the game.

“I gave him a big hug after the game,” Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa said. “It was a tough moment.

“For him to come back and still be part of this team means so much to all of us, and it means a lot to him too.”
