Only a prototype ... for now
Expect something like Infiniti QX Inspiration in showrooms soon
What is it? An SUV concept that previews Infiniti’s first electric vehicle and portends a vastly expanded EV portfolio for the entire Nissan group.
Why does it matter? Well, as the Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X illustrate, melding the popularity of a sport utility with the emissions reduction of battery power, all wrapped up in luxury-segment hedonism, seems to be the sweet spot in the growing EV revolution.
In the QX Inspiration’s case that means melding what Infiniti calls “Ma” design — “open spaces between lines create tension and build anticipation” — with an e-AWD system that features high-power electric motors on both axles.
As with other electrified SUVs, the Inspiration’s batteries are built onto the platform’s lower floor, reducing the centre of gravity compared with gas-powered QXs.
Another benefit of the new QX’s zero-emission powertrain, says Infiniti, is that its compact size allows the Inspiration an even roomier cabin, which “enables the vehicle’s human-centred ergonomics and creates a welcoming, open atmosphere that invites occupants to relax in comfort.”
When is it coming? Well, since it’s a concept, never. But something very like it will soon be in Infiniti showrooms, so if you’re interested in an electrified sport brute with a performance edge, you’ll be shopping Infiniti.
Should I buy one? Nissan is one of the leaders in battery-powered electrification, and Infiniti knows how to make a sporting SUV. Unless they really cock this up, the production version of the QX Inspiration should be worth waiting for.
