Mercedes-Benz offers extra digital features after sale
Mercedes-Benz is introducing a virtual store in its vehicles that will allow buyers to spec their own additional options after they purchase the vehicle.
The latest version of the “Mercedes Me” app will be globally updated to include the store, which lets owners buy downloadable features such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, digital radio and enhanced navigation.
Obviously the upgrades are limited to the MBUX system — you can’t just download all-wheel drive if your car wasn’t built that way.
The idea works in a way similar to the one Tesla uses to send updates remotely to upgrade its vehicles, except Mercedes’ aren’t free, but are optional, so each feature can be ordered separately.
Mercedes-Benz says this system will help buyers on the used market as well, because even the second or third owner can add on features that were not purchased by the previous owner.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class, B-Class and GLE will be the first models to use the system.
Pricing for the apps has not been announced, but we’re hoping they aren’t significantly more expensive than they would have been if ordered at the time of original purchase.
Similar digital shopping systems have been tried by other manufacturers. Honda has Dream Drive, and General Motors cars in the U.S. include Marketplace, which both offer in-car shopping via partnerships with a range of vendors and brands.
