Stecher, Tanev picking Pats to win Super Bowl
DENVER — First, some history. Chris Tanev knows what “wide right” means. As an ardent Buffalo Bills follower — their games were regularly shown on Toronto-area stations when he was growing up — the Vancouver Canucks defenceman knows all about letting the big one get away.
The Bills blew an opportunity to win Super Bowl XXV in 1991 when Scott Norwood’s 47-yard field goal attempt with eight seconds remaining went a foot wide of the right upright. It allowed the New York Giants to hang on for a 20-19 win. So Tanev has been through a lot of pain.
“Yes, I have,” he said Saturday before being asked whether the Patriots or Rams will triumph in Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta. “I think it’s tough to bet against New England, as much as I hate it because I’m a Bills fan. They have everything — the culture, the coach, the QB and everyone buys into the game plan. And they always have the best game plan.”
Troy Stecher is all Tom Brady all the time, so you know who he likes Sunday. The quarterback who directs the Pats has won five Super Bowls and was named MVP in four of them.
“Pats,” said the Canucks blueliner. “The GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) ain’t losing in back-to-back years. His documentary on Facebook that I watched — Tom Versus Time — is amazing. It showed how dedicated he is, and how can you not like him? He’s such a professional and just so good. And he’s 41.”
