Bill Herman, age 69, of Richmond, BC passed away peacefully on April 18, 2019 after a long battle with many health complications. Never far from his side were his loving wife and daughter. Besides his wife of 45 years Beverley (Knodel) and daughter Crystal, Bill is survived by his cousins Jim Kotow (Diane), Donna Kotow and Dwayne Chimera; his brother-in-law Lynden Knodel (Louise) and their children Emma and Mark; sisters-in-law Bonnie Hofer (Paul) and her sons Matt and Clayton, Benita Siljak (Mike), and Brenda Lutz (John) and their children Barclay and Jaime. Predeceasing Bill were his parents Allan and Elsie Herman, younger brother Ronald, beloved Uncle Walter Chimera, and Aunts Anne Chimera and Kay Kotow. Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta and often referred to as Dr. Dirt, Bill completed his PhD in Soil Biochemistry at The University of British Columbia. Prior to that, he received his BSc and MSc at the University of Alberta. He started in the agriculture industry at the research station in Lethbridge, Alberta. In 1979 he co-founded Pacific Soil Analysis, from where he retired in 2012. He was very proud of his input into the Soils Component of the BC Landscape Society Spec. As his long-time friends Rod, Grant and Tom would tell you, Bill was a no fuss type of man. Beer and chicken wings would be his meal of choice. Jeans and one of Crystal’s college t-shirts were appropriate to wear to any event. Camping was his holiday of choice, however he enjoyed softball travel tournaments and September getaways to Oroville, Wa. Bill loved the simple things which included his family, his work and the outdoors. Special thank you to the staff at Purdy Pavilion 2 which included his favourite nurse Susie, many care aides, Dr. Griffin and his loyal caregivers, Imelda, Ruby and Christie. Bill, who was a long-time survivor of Type 1 diabetes, would appreciate any donations be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
