Dr. Richard Franklin Berwick, a highly regarded sociolinguist in Canada and Japan, passed away on June 3, 2019, in his home in North Vancouver, at the age of 74. Dr. Berwick taught applied linguistics and cross-cultural communication at the University of British Columbia, Capilano University and Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan. An active volunteer for local nonprofit organizations, he served those in need at the Collingwood Breakfast Program for a decade, and gave many eye-opening presentations on social and political issues at various discussion groups.

He grew up in Los Angeles, receiving a bachelor's degree from University of California at Berkeley, and eventually a master's and a doctorate in English education and adult education from the University of British Columbia. Known for his sense of humor and intellect, he loved to debate, and always had a sincere, open and unbiased perspective on people from all cultures and walks of life. He loved to spend time with his family and friends, and travel the world with his wife. His many friends in Canada and Japan will miss him very much.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Taeko; his daughter, Yuri; his son, Benjamin; granddaughter, Maya; and many friends and extended family. A celebration of life will be held in North Vancouver on June 30th. In lieu of flowers, kindly send donations to the North Shore Hospice and Palliative Project. May his memory be for a blessing.
