Raptors’ salary situation bears watching

-

The Toronto Raptors and the organization will surely spend plenty of time enjoying its historic win, but the business of basketball never stops. The offseason is upon us, with the draft going on Thursday in Brooklyn and free agency kicking off on June 30, hours earlier than usual, with the Las Vegas Summer League following closely.

This is where Toronto’s rotation players stand contractually as the summer gets underway: KAWHI LEONARD — Will be an unrestricted free agent but can get more money and term from the Raptors than any other team.

PASCAL SIAKAM — Still on rookie contract, but will surely be offered a big-money extension by the team.

DANNY GREEN — Will be an unrestricted free agent, but Raptors own his Bird Rights, meaning they can go over the salary cap to bring him back.

KYLE LOWRY — Will have one year remaining on his contract at $33.29 million.

MARC GASOL — Will have one year remaining on his contract at $25.6 million. Can opt out, but it is highly unlikely he does so.

SERGE IBAKA — Has one year remaining on his contract at $23.2 million.

FRED VANVLEET — Entering final year of his contract before unrestricted free agency.

NORMAN POWELL — Two years plus a player option remaining on contract.

OG ANUNOBY — Still on rookie contract Other: Team has options on Chris Boucher and Malcolm Miller and can make a qualifying offer to retain Patrick McCaw. Jeremy Lin, Eric Moreland and Jodie Meeks will be unrestricted free agents.

The Raptors will not have any cap space to bring in outside free agents unless Leonard and Green do not come back and Gasol opts out. They potentially could have an exception or two to utilize, depending on what happens and how much luxury tax the organization is comfortable paying in pursuit of back-to-back championships.
