Teen killed in 2018 was unintended victim of targeted shooting: IHIT

Homicide investigators say 19-year-old Jagvir Malhi was not the intended victim when he was shot to death in Abbotsford last year.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team released new photos on Friday of vehicles linked to the homicide. Investigators said they do not have a suspect. IHIT says Malhi was the unintended victim of a shooting that was targeting another individual.

“Jagvir Malhi was a young university student with no history of criminality, however there were some individuals in his life that were involved in the Lower Mainland gang conflict,” said IHIT’s Sgt. Frank Jang.

The shooting happened in Abbotsford near an elementary school, which was closed for the Remembrance Day statutory holiday.

Malhi was shot at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, 2018, at the intersection of Simpson and Ross roads. He was flown by helicopter to hospital, where he died.

IHIT learned of a burning dark blue Acura TL found in the area of 128A Street and 109 Avenue in Surrey around 4:20 p.m. on the same afternoon.

Jang said it appeared someone attempted to burn the vehicle but the fire was extinguished by the Surrey Fire Department before the car sustained significant damage. Police have now linked the burned vehicle to the homicide.

Police have obtained video surveillance footage including one showing a white Mazda 3 driving in tandem with the blue Acura TL.

Investigators believe the occupants of the blue Acura TL set the vehicle on fire before leaving in the white Mazda 3. IHIT would like to speak with anyone that has information about either vehicles.

It’s a shooting that homicide officers said showed “a blatant disregard for the safety of the community.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551IHIT (4448), or by email atihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
