Insurance rates for new drivers are positively outrageous

-

I have three nieces and two nephews between the ages of 18 and 24. It has come to my attention that they all are being charged multiple thousands of dollars per year to pay for insurance to drive a vehicle in B.C. This is insanity.

It is my opinion that it is too easy to get a driver’s licence in B.C. It is my understanding that many individuals who are running businesses as driving instructors have little to no expertise in this field. Instead of forcing new drivers to pay excessive insurance premiums, why not instead insist that they get world-class training to become expert drivers? Would that not be a better use of money and also make our roads safer?

Young people have the great advantages of quick reflexes, superior vision, and an abundance of energy that can be focused. What young people lack is experience, proper training, and a full understanding that they are not immortal. Financially punishing young people for their weaknesses year after year instead of making them invest some one-time money into proper driving training that plays to their strengths makes no sense.

This will be an election issue. Young people and their parents vote. Premier John Horgan, you need to rethink your approach to making B.C. roads safe. You need to get this right, and if you do, you will not only be praised, you will also be rewarded for your common sense approach to driver training and licensing in this province.
