LEPIK, Johanna

-

Oct. 6, 1913 - May 22, 2020

Johanna started her life in 1913 on the island of Saaremaa, Estonia. The outbreak of World War 1 brought difficulties for the family making it necessary for her to be raised in a relative's home. Marrying her suitor Albert in 1937, she established a family home at his homestead on Saaremaa. The occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union during WW 2 dictated the need to flee across the Baltic Sea in the fall of 1944. This journey via a small open boat along with their 2 children, one of whom was only 3 months old ended with a appreciated welcome in Sweden. The family had expected to return to an independent Estonia after the conflict, but this was not to be. The family lived in Sweden for 9 years, but with the close proximity of the Soviet Bear, anxiety prompted yet another major move to Canada in 1953. After a short stay in Windsor the family moved to Toronto to be part of the Estonian community. In 1959 they moved to Vancouver to enjoy the climate and to be close to extended family. Here, Johanna was able to live peacefully, nurturing her family, indulging in her love of gardening, especially flowers and being involved with her church. After Albert's death in 1998, Johanna moved out to White Rock to be near family. Johanna was predeceased by husband Albert, son Uno and daughter Evi. Lovingly remembered by sons Jan and Peter (Anne), grandchildren Alan, Krista, Andrea, Karl, Elizabeth, 5 greatgrandchildren, extended family and friends. Johanna had an abiding faith in God and lived a long full life of 106 years. A graveside funeral will be held 11:00 AM Thursday June 4, 2020 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Mount Forest section. Please respect the Covid-19 guidelines.
