Wings and Wheels helps cancer fight

- ANDREW MCCREDIE

The list of things disrupted by COVID-19 is depressingly long. From lost jobs to lost vacations, from missing friends to missing annual celebrations, we’ve all experienced upheavals to our routines and lives.

An Abbotsford custom car shop is doing its part this weekend to bring back a couple of things we miss, albeit just for a couple of days. That would be fundraising for a deadly disease and car shows.

The first annual Wings and Wheels show is a drivethru event featuring all manner of vintage airplanes, classic automobiles, military vehicles and even farm equipment spread out over 120,000 square feet of display space. All proceeds will go to The Crystal Gala Foundation for Breast Cancer.

The show is the brainchild of the 360 Group of Companies, an Abbotsford-based business world-renowned for it custom car restorations and fabrications.

“Our company has made the Crystal Gala Foundation our charity of choice, and we’ve committed a $100,000 donation to the organization to assist them in funding much needed equipment for assisting in the fight against breast cancer,” said 360 president Rick Francoeur. “As a local business we know how important the work this organization does for those facing this horrible disease and we also know that their annual fundraising gala had to be cancelled due to COVID.”

For the foundation, the event, which is billed as North America’s largest drive-thru car show, is welcome news.

“In a year where we believed we would not be able to make our planned gifts due to the difficulties created by COVID-19, this event is absolutely incredible,” said Crystal Gala Chair Gerri Charles.

“We are so grateful to 360 Fabrication for their commitment to assisting with this cause, and to all the businesses who are jumping on board to contribute and participate as well as the individuals who are displaying their planes and vehicles in support of this incredible cause.”

The Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festival will also be on side with top food truck vendors participating and supporting Wings and Wheels and the Crystal Gala with a portion of sales contributed to the cause.

Tickets, which are $20 per carload, will be available on site but organizers are encouraging people to buy them online at FVTRADEX. com. Developed in consultation with the Fraser Health District, Wings and Wheels will adhere to all COVID safety protocols.
