Silverado could borrow tailgate traits

Chevy eyeing GMC Sierra's multi-function idea that includes 6 positions, including work station

If you're a Chevy truck fan all the way, but you still glance enviously at the GMC Sierra's multi-function tailgate, you may be in luck. If rumours prove true, the Silverado could be getting a version of it as well.

According to GM Authority, the tailgate — which includes six functions and positions, including for second-tier loading and as a work station — will also be available on the Silverado.

The site says the feature is mentioned in the 2020 Silverado owner's manual, even though it isn't actually offered on the truck, at least not yet.

It's possible the new tailgate could be added some time during the 2021 model year, or kept under wraps until 2022, when the truck is expected to get a mild refresh.

GMC calls it the MultiPro gate, while Chevy's version might be the MultiFlex. It's also possible the tailgate could get some new features, and that's not a surprising rumour in light of what other manufacturers are doing with their box ends. Every trim level of Ford's upcoming new F-150 has tie-down cleats on the tailgate, while an optional “workbench” package for the gate adds indentations for C-clamps, a ruler, cupholder, and phone holder.

Ram offers a two-piece tailgate that opens out from the middle or drops down, while Honda's Ridgeline was ahead of them all, with a standard drop-down or side-opening tailgate right from the first one.
