2022 Tucson takes on radical new design

- DAVID BOOTH

It's a radical new redesign, Hyundai's 2022 Tucson.

Where previous Hyundai compact sport utes went for the soft and cuddly look, the new Tucson is all angles and bulges.

Hyundai calls the effect “Parametric Dynamic,” and it is a radically different and distinctly attractive design from the normally conservative automaker. The new Tucson is powered by a unique combination of engines.

First up, there's the conventional naturally aspirated 2.5-litre Smartstream, its four direct-injected cylinders pumping out 190 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque. It's mated to an eight-speed automatic. Then there's a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine capable of 180 hp and 195 lb.-ft of torque, but it's not available as a stand-alone option, only paired with either a hybrid or Hyundai's new plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Hyundai says the non-PHEV version is good for a combined 230 hp and 258 lb.-ft of torque, but is not releasing any figures for the plug-in version other than to say it will be more powerful. As for an EV model, the only thing we can say for now is that there will be more than 50 kilometres of all-electric range. The Tucson's HTRAC all-wheel-drive system is equipped with Mud, Sand and Snow modes, along with the conventional Eco, Comfort, Smart and Sport selections.

Hybrid and PHEV models get Hyundai's first-in-class E-Handling technology to help improve steering response and directional stability when cornering.

The new Hyundai Tucson will go on sale in Canada as a 2022 model in the first half of 2021.
