Twitter users vote to dump Marvel star over alleged MAGA ties
In the battle of the famous Chrises, Chris Pratt is the one most Twitter users can live without.
Screenwriter and television producer Amy Berg took to social media and challenged followers to eliminate one wellknown Chris with the caption, “One has to go,” alongside photos of Chris Pratt, Chris Pine, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans.
The post immediately went viral, with nearly 7,000 comments and over 13,000 retweets.
But respondents overwhelmingly voted to turf Pratt, citing his alleged support of U.S. President Donald Trump and allegations that the church he belongs is anti-LGBTQ.
“Chris Pratt because he's MAGA. He's the worst Chris,” one user wrote, while another added, “Well, seeing as three of them are progressive, and one of them actively defends his church for being homophobic ... Bye, Chris Pratt.”
Pratt's backing of Trump was inferred by the fact that he won't be joining his Avengers co-stars Don Cheadle, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana in an upcoming virtual fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
But Pratt, who supported former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2012, told Men's Journal in 2017 that he didn't identify as Republican or Democrat.
“I don't feel represented by either side,” he said. “I really feel there's common ground out there that's missed because we focus on the things that separate us ... I feel like I could have a beer or a meal with just about anyone and find something to relate to.”
Pratt's Hillsong Church was also the subject of much criticism last year after actress Ellen Page called the organization “infamously antiLGBTQ.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy star responded to her claims on his Instagram, writing, “It has recently been suggested that I belong to a church which `hates a certain group of people' and
is `infamously anti-LGBTQ.' Nothing could be further from the truth.”
He added, “I go to a church that opens their doors to absolutely everyone ... regardless of sexual orientation, race or gender.”
Pratt, who recently welcomed a daughter with wife Katherine Schwarzenegger, is the son-inlaw of noted Republican and staunch Trump critic Arnold Schwarzenegger.
This is the second time in a
month that Pratt has courted controversy on social media. The actor found himself under fire after he used his Instagram page to promote his recent animated release Onward at the upcoming People's Choice Awards.
“What the hell Chris Pratt???” one user wrote. “You could've just said “please vote for me” and not make jokes on dying or joking about this VERY important election.”
