Art was born in Colchester, England to Frank and Mary Alexander. His family lived in Troon, Scotland before moving to Iraq, where Art's dad worked as an engineer on the oil pipeline. They moved to Canada at the beginning of WWII, and lived in Toronto, Winona, Ottawa, Hamilton, and Kitchener, before moving to Edmonton. Art had fond memories of being a "Boy Scout" and made lifetime friends through this organization. He completed his Engineering Degree in 1954, and did his apprenticeship in Liverpool England. He moved back to St. Catharines, Ontario in 1959, and worked for English Electric. He married Marilyn Stewart, and they raised their four girls together. Art moved his family to Richmond BC in 1967 to live on Marilyn's parents' blueberry farm. He worked on the farm and took his MBA at UBC. He then worked as a production engineer for Canron, BC Research, Pacific Press, and did private consulting work. He taught mathematics and statistics at City University, and did custodial work for Brighouse United Church in his early retirement. Art had many hobbies, and liked to do woodworking projects; go camping; cycle whenever he could; hike; take scenic photos; and created a wonderful garden. He loved to sing, and he and Marilyn sang in the Handel Choir. He was a founding member of the Richmond Anti-Pollution Association, and became an active member of the North Shore Hikers. He loved animals and would carry bones in his pocket to ensure good acquaintance with crows and neighbourhood dogs. Art and Marilyn divorced, and he moved to North Vancouver where he enjoyed outdoor activities with his friends in the North Shore Hikers. Art traveled on many adventures with his companion Elishka Klima, and they moved together to Abbotsford in 2018. In retirement he was a regular commentator in the Vancouver Sun online editorials. Art battled prostate cancer for many years before succumbing to his illness with his love Elishka by his side. He is survived by his partner Elishka; daughters, Kathryn, Marnet, Carole, Wendy; grandchildren Kimberly, Joel; and brother Bruce. Art was a remarkable man who lived fully.
