JOHNSON, Alex George

-

September 15, 1931 - May 9, 2021 Alex George Johnson of Ladysmith, BC (September 15, 1931 - May 9, 2021) was the son of Ernest Johnson and Myrtle Chambers, husband to Anne Rola, brother of Ernie and Leslie, father of Guy (Karen) and Kim (Mary), grandfather of Clint (Kaleigh), Julianne, Scott, Monique and Marcus, great grandfather of Annie and in retirement a partner to Sheila. In 1951 Alex enlisted in the RCAF and did his training at Claresholm, AB and Camp Borden, ON and joined his squadron at North Bay ON. As an aircraft mechanic he was posted in 1952 to CFB Grostenquin, France, in 1956 to CFB Comox, BC, in 1962 to CFB Summerside, PEI, in 1966 to CFB Trenton, OT and in 1970 back to CFB Comox, BC. At CFB Trenton he was trained in the emerging field of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) and specialized at freaking out kids with his green glowing teeth illuminated by black light. In 1974 Alex left the RCAF and became a NDT engineering technician working out of Prince George and Vancouver BC. His job sites were all over BC, the Oil Patch and as far north as an ice-breaker in Resolute Bay. Always an avid sport fisherman, he fly-fished the freshwater streams of PEI, he fished with light tackle in the lakes of Algonquin Park and the Madawaska River and on many of the streams around the Bay of Quinte. Yet, Alex's best years were on Vancouver Island. During the evening he would fish for salmon at Kitty Coleman and Bates Beach and during the summer he would camp and fish at the Gap (Porlier Pass). At 60 Alex retired first to Ladysmtih, BC and then second to Saanich, BC. In Ladysmith he enjoyed hiking the trails up to Heart Lake to visit the ashes of Anne and his father in law Mike. In Saanich he became a competitive senior swimmer traveling to meets around BC and as faraway as Hawaii. In his golden years he was very proud that he set provincial senior records and was still dolphin-kicking 50 meter butterflies well into his early 80s. Alex packed a lot of adventure into his 89years and had a really good kick at the can. Family and friends will dearly miss him.
