NHRA creates new class for EV racing
The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) has added an electric vehicle class for its drag racing events.
The sanctioning body made the decision after a series of meetings on electric drag racing over the past four years.
Large domestic brands such as Chevrolet and Ford have already shown what they can do with electric power, with the eCOPO Camaro and the Cobra Jet 1400 prototypes, respectively.
NHRA vice-president of competition Ned Walisser said the new class will provide automakers with “a platform to showcase their EV technology, production, and racing efforts.”
The class will debut in 2022 in the NHRA Summit Racing Series, which will give fans their first view of the new class of racers.
