Sky Blues clear

Man City goes three points up on Liverpool

-

Manchester City lifted the gloom of their Champions League exit to seize control of the Premier League title race with a 5-0 hammering of Newcastle United and Everton took a big leap towards safety on Sunday.

Arsenal also boosted their hopes of finishing in the top four with a 2-1 home victory against a Leeds United side who dropped into the bottom three.

Any hangover following their dramatic semifinal loss against Real Madrid was swept away as Raheem Sterling struck twice for Manchester City in the sunshine at The Etihad Stadium.

Aymeric Laporte, Rodri and Phil Foden were also on the scoresheet as City reclaimed top spot and moved three points ahead of Liverpool, who drew with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Both sides have three games left to play and City now also have a four-goal superior goal difference.

The title race continues in midweek with Liverpool up against Aston Villa on Tuesday and City facing Wolverhampton Wanderers the day after.

Everton's 2-1 victory at Leicester City took them out of the relegation zone.

Defenders Vitalii Mykolenko and Mason Holgate both scored at the King Power Stadium to move Frank Lampard's side up two spots to 16th on 35 points, one point above the drop zone.

Leeds are heading in the other direction after a selfinflicted defeat at fourth-placed Arsenal.

An early quick-fire double from former Leeds loanee Eddie Nketiah put Arsenal in firm control before the visitors were reduced to 10 midway through the first half when

Luke Ayling was sent off for a two-footed challenge on

Gabriel Martinelli.

Leeds did not have an attempt at goal until Diego Llorente's header beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the 66th minute but Arsenal weathered a nervy finish to close out their fourth successive victory and solidify their hold on fourth place.

Arsenal are four points above fifth-placed Tottenham who they play on Thursday, and are only a point behind thirdplaced Chelsea.

West Ham United bounced back from their Europa League semifinal defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt to thrash already relegated Norwich City 4-0 at Carrow Road.

ATLETICO TOPS REAL

A first-half penalty by Yannick Carrasco earned Atletico Madrid a 1-0 victory in a fiery derby clash against champions Real Madrid on Sunday, as the hosts tightened their grip on a place in next season's Champions League.

Atletico, who welcomed the newly crowned LaLiga champions to the Wanda Metropolitano without the traditional guard of honour, came out pressing high as Angel Correa and Carrasco had two great chances to open the scoring within the first ten minutes.

Carrasco put the hosts ahead in the 40th minute, after a penalty was awarded to Atletico following a VAR review for a foul on Matheus Cunha.

Diego Simeone's side remain fourth in the standings on 64 points, six clear of Real Betis in fifth, and with three games left to play. The top four qualify for the Champions League next season.

MILAN RESTORE LEAD

A Sandro Tonali double moved AC Milan one step closer to their first Serie A title in 11 years after they regained top spot with a 3-1 comeback victory at Hellas Verona.

After rivals Inter Milan provisionally moved top of the standings with a 4-2 win over Empoli, the pressure was on Stefano Pioli's side and the triumph over ninth-placed Verona moved them two points clear at the top with two rounds left.

PSG BLOWS TWO-GOAL LEAD

Champions Paris St Germain let a two-goal lead slip for a second successive Ligue 1 game as they were held 2-2 by Troyes at the Parc des Princes.

Just as had been the case at Racing Strasbourg last weekend, the Parisian giants looked to be cruising to victory but then let their opponents back into the game and had to share the spoils.

CHELSEA WINS WSL

Chelsea won the Women's Super League with a brilliant 4-2 come-from-behind win over Manchester United on Sunday featuring two stunning volleys from Sam Kerr to secure their third straight league title and fifth in seven years.

Arsenal, who beat West Ham United 2-0, finished second on 56 points, one behind Chelsea, and Manchester City grabbed the final Champions League spot by beating Reading to finish third.
