Port Moody resident fined for luring wildlife with food

A Port Moody resident has been fined after it was found they had been leaving food out for wildlife.

The B.C. Conservation Service said the fine was issued at a time when there had been increased reports of coyote encounters and sightings in the area.

According to the service, the resident was leaving tuna, hotdogs and pet food on their property, accessible to wildlife. The resident was issued a $230 ticket, as leaving food out that could attract dangerous wildlife is an offence under the B.C. Wildlife Act.

Leaving food out can lure bears, coyotes and other dangerous wildlife, and possibly cause interactions between humans and wildlife that endanger humans and risk wildlife needing to be put down if too accustomed to interacting with humans.
