BAYER, Ernest Leo

April 7, 1933 – April 28, 2022

Ernie Bayer, of Surrey, BC, passed away at the age of 89 on April 28, 2022 at Langley Memorial Hospital. He was surrounded by his adoring wife and daughters at the time of his passing.

He married Charlene, the love of his life, in 1966, who survives him. Ernie is also survived by daughter Lisa Brolin and husband Greg, and daughter Catherine Lofvendahl and husband Sean as well as grandchild­ren, Nathan, Janna, Madelaine, and Jevin. And by his sister Elsie, brother Jerry and their families as well as extended family in Austria. Ernie was predecease­d by his parents Leo and Mary Bayer and brother Gotfried.

Ernie worked numerous jobs before his career at Western Canada Steel Mill, where he worked for 30 years and made some amazing friendship­s, nicknamed ‘Old Grizz’ by his friends at the mill. Ernie was known for his kind dispositio­n, and sense of humor. He was a well-respected member of society, advocating for senior’s rights with COSCO – the Council of Senior Citizens Org. and spending many years involved with the Lower Fraser Valley Exhibition Associatio­n, the Surrey Historical Society, and with the Friends of the Museum of Surrey & Archives. Ernie had a love of travel, baseball, and an insatiable sweet tooth. Anyone who knew Ernie knew that he was the most loving father, grandfathe­r, and husband a family could ask for and the friend you could always count on, he will be in our hearts and thoughts forever.

The funeral service and burial will be held at Valley View Funeral Home in Surrey on May 26, starting at 1:00 p.m., and a celebratio­n of life with refreshmen­ts will follow. His family will be present to welcome loved ones. Memorial donations may be made in Ernie’s honor to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC.
