B.C. SPCA offering small animals for adoption

- JOSEPH RUTTLE

Step aside for a moment, Rover and Tigger. The B.C. SPCA is putting its little pets in the spotlight for the rest of May in a pay-what-you-can adoption promotion.

While dogs and cats get most of the attention when it comes to family pets, SPCA shelters also have plenty of other little creatures waiting for good homes, including rabbits, gerbils, guinea pigs, mice and rats, birds and reptiles.

In the Little Creatures, Big Hearts event through May 31, people who take home a small pet other than a dog or cat can do so at whatever price they feel they can afford.

“Best friends come in all shapes and sizes, and we have so many interesting and wonderful animals looking for loving homes,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of communications for the B.C. SPCA.

Chortyk notes small animals can bond with their caretakers just as more common pets do, but the SPCA wants to make sure those considering adopting them know what kind of care they need.

“We have many resources on our B.C. SPCA website to

help guardians understand how to help their pint-sized pets live their best life, and our staff and volunteers are always happy to help with information and advice.”

Anyone interested can view the available animals at spca. bc.ca/adopt, where you'll also find online instructions to follow the adoption process.
