Wells Inquiry gets extra six months to report
The Wells’ inquiry into helicopter offshore safety now has until Sept. 30 to submit its Phase 1 report.
Inquiry commissioner Robert Wells said earlier this month he had requested an extension to his original Mar. 31 deadline.
The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (CNLOPB) announced the deadline exten- sion Thursday. The board established the inquiry in April, following the Mar. 12, 2009, helicopter crash that claimed the lives of 17 people.
During Phase 1, which includes ongoing public hearings, the inquiry’s mandate is to find ways to improve helicopter safety for offshore workers travelling to the oilfields off Newfoundland.
Phase 2 begins when the Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the cause of the helicopter crash, releases its report.
Then, the inquiry will review the TSB report and make recommendations to the CNLOPB.
