The Southern Gazette - - SPORTS -

Twenty-five teams will challenge for two titles in the 13th annual Confederation Cup High School Hockey Invitational Tournament, to be played in the metro St. John’s area Feb. 3-6.

Games will be played on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula, featuring entries from Nova Scotia and all areas of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Championship schools will be presented with a beautiful local print to commemorate their winning of the championship, and their team name will be inscribed on the Confederation Cup Trophy.

Academy Canada will present special wristwatches to the player judged to demonstrate top sportsmanship on each team.

Tournament convener Charlie Decker explained “ Each team will play a minimum of four games. First round results will decide opponents and schedule in the playoff round. The tournament format has two divisions.

“ Play starts Thursday and Friday at 3 p. m. and will continue into the evening, with morning starts Saturday and championship games will be played Sunday. Times and locations for title games have yet to be decided.”

Decker noted previous tournaments have been extremely successful.

“Confederation Cup has an excellent group of volunteers, many of whom have been with it for years. They have played major roles in developing this annual competition.

“ The Confederation Cup’s great reputation has resulted in the tournament being held in high esteem by high school teams and so many teams from within and from outside the province wish to enter.”
