The Indoor 50+ Walking Program for the Marystown-burin area restarted last week.

The Marystown program is conducted at Sacred Heart Academy gymnasium, while the Burin Program takes place at Jamieson Academy gymnasium.

The program is designed to serve people 50 years of age and older in Marystown and Burin, and neighboring towns and communities; however, younger adults are invited to participate as well.

The main goal of the program is to provide a safe age-friendly indoor environment during the winter where the 50+ population can improve their health through walking and other exercise components that include weight training, flexibility and balance training.

Marystown: 6:30- 8 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays – Sacred Heart Academy

Burin: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays; 45:30 p.m. Thursdays – Jamieson Academy

Registration is $10 bi-monthly; once registered, participants may attend sessions in Burin and/or Marystown.

Participants must receive medical clearance prior to participating in the program. Screening forms used at registration include a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q), a Consent Form and a Health History Activity Questionnaire.

In most cases, the program manager is able to give medical clearance; if not, a prospective participant will need clearance from his/her family physician.

These 50+ Physical Activity Programs are sponsored by the respective Recreation Commissions in Burin and Marystown.

In addition to this programming, the Burin Senior Citizens 50+ Club sponsors a similar physical activity program for club members at its Club in Burin. This program is conducted three times a week 2-3:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This program starts this week.

The 2011 Mariners Athletics Running Club ‘Boxing Day Fun Run’ was a major success.

Participation continues to grow with a total of 46 walkers, joggers and runners crossing the finish line.

MARC hosted the fun run; Edwards and Associates Ltd. sponsored the event. For the past three years, Edwards and Associates Ltd. has sponsored the event, offsetting the cost to the Club while making a donation to a charitable organization.

A total of $246 was donated to the Sacred Heart Breakfast Program. Several boxes of non-perishable food items were also donated to the Marystown Family Aid.

The fun run started and finished near the Marystown Summer Games Building. The distance was five kilometers, mostly on Harris Drive and Ville Marie Drive.

In 2012, MARC and Edwards and Associates Ltd. will work together to make the fun run even more successful with a goal of getting the registration up to 60 or more participants.
