Cross surges ahead in early Challenge Cup
St. Lawrence Laurentians will have another weekend off on the provincial Challenge Cup soccer schedule this upcoming weekend.
Only two games are set to go with Mount Pearl meeting Conception Bay (CB) Auto Strikers in Topsail Saturday and Holy Cross hosting the Feildians at King George V pitch in St. John’s.
Laurentians played host to CB Strikers this past weekend – Saturday and Sunday in St. Lawrence – for its two home openers. Mount Pearl took on the Feildians and Holy Cross played host to St. John’s U18s in the other weekend matches.
St. Lawrence is back on the soccer pitch June 23 squaring off again Holy Cross in St. John’s. The next day the Laurentians play CB in Topsail.
Tomorrow night at King George V pitch, Holy Cross will battle the Feildians.
Last week, Mount Pearl blanked St. John’s U18s 3-0 with Justin Pickford scoring the winner six minutes into the game. Sean Drew made it 2-0 before half time and Mark Reddy added the final tally. Luke Olmstead recorded the victory in nets.
In earlier games, Holy Cross turned the tables on Mount Pearl with a similar 3-0 shutout. Jake Warren had the winning goal at 21 minutes and Pat Reddick booted two more in the second half. Keeper Brandon Noseworthy counted the win.
Feildians shutdown St. John’s U18s 4-0 with goals from Chris Burry at 38 minutes; Richard Hickey, Sean Fardy and Blaise Peters tallied markers in the second half. David Hickey was in goal for the blanking.
