Cross surges ahead in early Chal­lenge Cup

St. Lawrence Lau­ren­tians will have an­other week­end off on the provin­cial Chal­lenge Cup soc­cer sched­ule this up­com­ing week­end.

Only two games are set to go with Mount Pearl meet­ing Con­cep­tion Bay (CB) Auto Strik­ers in Top­sail Satur­day and Holy Cross host­ing the Feil­dians at King Ge­orge V pitch in St. John’s.

Lau­ren­tians played host to CB Strik­ers this past week­end – Satur­day and Sun­day in St. Lawrence – for its two home open­ers. Mount Pearl took on the Feil­dians and Holy Cross played host to St. John’s U18s in the other week­end matches.

St. Lawrence is back on the soc­cer pitch June 23 squar­ing off again Holy Cross in St. John’s. The next day the Lau­ren­tians play CB in Top­sail.

To­mor­row night at King Ge­orge V pitch, Holy Cross will bat­tle the Feil­dians.

Last week, Mount Pearl blanked St. John’s U18s 3-0 with Justin Pick­ford scor­ing the win­ner six min­utes into the game. Sean Drew made it 2-0 be­fore half time and Mark Reddy added the fi­nal tally. Luke Olm­stead recorded the vic­tory in nets.

In ear­lier games, Holy Cross turned the ta­bles on Mount Pearl with a sim­i­lar 3-0 shutout. Jake War­ren had the win­ning goal at 21 min­utes and Pat Red­dick booted two more in the sec­ond half. Keeper Bran­don Nose­wor­thy counted the win.

Feil­dians shutdown St. John’s U18s 4-0 with goals from Chris Burry at 38 min­utes; Richard Hickey, Sean Fardy and Blaise Peters tal­lied mark­ers in the sec­ond half. David Hickey was in goal for the blank­ing.
