Marlins claim top finishes at season’s first meet
Competition in the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Swim Clubs 2012 season was launched July 22 with the annual Bay Roberts Sea Lions Invitational Swim Meet.
The Marystown Marlins Swim Club had 45 swimmers attend, joining swimmers from the Bay Roberts Sea Lions and the Clarenville WaveRunners. A total of 219 swimmers, ranging from 6-18 years, registered for the one-day event.
The Marlins swam to 10 individual first place finishes as well as placing second in nine individual events and third in 13, with a total of 38 fourth to sixth place finishes. Marystown swimmers achieved a total of 116 personal best times with 33 swimmers improving in all three of their events.
These performances resulted in the Marystown Marlins Club claiming the award for ‘ Top Visiting Team’.
Three Marlins swimmers won the distinction of ‘ Top Achiever’ in their age groups, based on total points earned in their individual events. Ben Rogers, 8, won in the Boys’ 8 & Under age group while 10-year-old Liam Best was Top Achiever in the Boys’ 9 and 10 age group, his fourth year in a row to have won a top achiever award.
In the Boys’ 15-16 age group, 15-year-old Michael Cooke earned the title.
