Mar­lins claim top fin­ishes at sea­son’s first meet

Com­pe­ti­tion in the New­found­land and Labrador Sum­mer Swim Clubs 2012 sea­son was launched July 22 with the an­nual Bay Roberts Sea Lions In­vi­ta­tional Swim Meet.

The Marys­town Mar­lins Swim Club had 45 swimmers at­tend, join­ing swimmers from the Bay Roberts Sea Lions and the Clarenvill­e WaveRun­ners. A to­tal of 219 swimmers, rang­ing from 6-18 years, reg­is­tered for the one-day event.

The Mar­lins swam to 10 in­di­vid­ual first place fin­ishes as well as plac­ing sec­ond in nine in­di­vid­ual events and third in 13, with a to­tal of 38 fourth to sixth place fin­ishes. Marys­town swimmers achieved a to­tal of 116 per­sonal best times with 33 swimmers im­prov­ing in all three of their events.

These per­for­mances re­sulted in the Marys­town Mar­lins Club claim­ing the award for ‘ Top Vis­it­ing Team’.

Three Mar­lins swimmers won the dis­tinc­tion of ‘ Top Achiever’ in their age groups, based on to­tal points earned in their in­di­vid­ual events. Ben Rogers, 8, won in the Boys’ 8 & Un­der age group while 10-year-old Liam Best was Top Achiever in the Boys’ 9 and 10 age group, his fourth year in a row to have won a top achiever award.

In the Boys’ 15-16 age group, 15-year-old Michael Cooke earned the ti­tle.
