Summer reading program fun for all
The Burin Memorial Library Summer Reading for Fun program kicked off in full swing July 2 with 40 children participating.
Tutor Kimberley Rice of St. Lawrence and site coordinator Kaitlyn Jarvis of Lewin’s Cove were eager to get started. The theme for this year’s summer 2013 program was ‘Candy Land’, which was a huge hit. Ms. Rice indicated “The kids really loved our Candy Land Castle.” The Tutors have planned activities throughout the summer. The first fun day was Candy Land Carnival. It included pin the nose on the clown, face painting, guess what’s in the mystery box, castle fun, carnival count, mask making, penny toss along with all the delicious treats of a carnival.
This month the tutors brought ‘Drive in Movie’ at the Candy Land Cinema to the program, in which ‘Herbie Fully Loaded’ took the screen.
Children were given movie tickets at the door and cashed them in at the actual concession stand for lots of yummy treats including popcorn, candy, bars, cupcakes and lemonade.
Since this was a Drive in Movie, the participants made their own cars that they loved. They also made finger puppets, colored pictures and played bingo for cool prizes.
Last week the tutors planned ‘Christmas in July’, which fell on Friday and included decorating a Christmas tree, Santa and presents, hot chocolate, dressing as mummers and other Christmas crafts.
Ms. Rice and Ms. Jarvis are very happy with the program and all the participants. They are having a great summer and really enjoy all the kids, looking forward to the weeks to come.
