Team NL headed to 2013 Canada Sum­mer Games

Months of hard work and prepa­ra­tion are about to be put to the test as Team New­found­land and Labrador trav­els to Sher­brooke, Que­bec, to par­tic­i­pate in the 2013 Canada Sum­mer Games.

The games are sched­uled Aug. 2-17.

A del­e­ga­tion of more than half of the 360 ath­letes, vol­un­teers, coaches, man­agers and mis­sion staff left Thurs­day, while the re­main­ing team mem­bers de­part Aug. 10, for the sec­ond week of com­pe­ti­tion.

Recre­ation Min­is­ter Terry French said “Team New­found­land and Labrador com­prises the best this prov­ince has to of­fer in sport. I wish the en­tire team the great­est suc­cess as they com­pete in this pres­ti­gious sport­ing event.

“I con­grat­u­late all the ath­letes for earn­ing the right to rep­re­sent our prov­ince at the games, and want to thank all the coaches and man­agers, mis­sion staff, vol­un­teers and par­ents for their com­mit­ment in help­ing th­ese young men and women de­velop their ath­letic tal­ents.”

Dur­ing the first week, Team New­found­land and Labrador will com­pete in base­ball, moun­tain bik­ing, sail­ing, soft­ball, swim­ming, ten­nis, vol­ley­ball, wrestling, men’s bas­ket­ball and women’s soc­cer.

In the sec­ond week, ath­letes will com­pete in ath­let­ics, beach vol­ley­ball, cycling, div­ing, golf, rowing, triathlon, men’s soc­cer and women’s bas­ket­ball.

The Canada Games were es­tab­lished in 1967 and New­found­land and Labrador has been rep­re­sented at ev­ery event since. The games are held ev­ery two years, al­ter­nat­ing sum­mer and win­ter.
