Can­cer blog ‘100 Perks’ leads to book

Lewin’s Cove res­i­dent re­al­izes life-long dream with pub­li­ca­tion

Florence Strang’s life-long dream to pub­lish a book has been re­al­ized.

This month, ‘100 Perks of Hav­ing Can­cer plus 100 Health Tips for Sur­viv­ing It!’ – a spin-off from her pop­u­lar blog, was re­leased by Ba­sic Health Pub­li­ca­tions.

The Lewin’s Cove res­i­dent, a reg­is­tered psy­chol­o­gist, co-au­thored the book with fel­low can­cer sur­vivor Su­san Gon­za­lez, a reg­is­tered nurse from Ge­or­gia in the United States.

Fol­low­ing her di­ag­no­sis with Stage 3 breast can­cer in April 2011, Ms. Strang be­gan writ­ing about the ex­pe­ri­ence on­line, and de­cided to at­tempt to come up with a hun­dred hu­mor­ous ‘ben­e­fits’ of the dis­ease.

Like­wise, Ms. Gon­za­lez also had a blog fo­cus­ing more on the healthy liv­ing side of the equa­tion, which Ms. Strang said she had started to fol­low.

“She had all th­ese great health tips to help you sur­vive can­cer and she was read­ing mine be­cause she thought it was funny and in­spi­ra­tional. So when the idea came to do a book, I asked her to join me in do­ing the pro­ject.”
