Marystown Town Council has issued a letter of intent to Quebecbased Pomerleau Inc. authorizing the company to immediately proceed with work on town’s new recreation complex.

A motion was passed approving the decision during Tuesday’s meeting.

Mayor Sam Synard said the company’s bid was the lowest of five submissions received for the project.

The bids ranged from Pomerleau’s $14.5 million, he said, up to more than $18 million.

Mayor Synard indicated Pomerleau Inc. moved into the province in recent years and secured work on some very big projects. The company has offices all across the country including one in St. John’s.

Ultimately, Mayor Synard said the letter of intent will allow Pomerleau to keep the sub-contractors that have been identified for the project in place.

“We’ve got some obstacles to overcome yet, but we feel confident enough that we’re going to sign off with Pomerleau and get them to start work, actually.

“We’ve got to fill some financial gaps. They’re not big financial gaps. We’ve had some good conversations with some funding agencies about filling in the gaps. So I can’t get into the specifics of it, but the bottom line is that we’re hoping this thing is going to get the green light in the matter of a week or two for sure.”

The new facility will be built on the corner of Harris Drive and McGettigan Boulevard. As such, the mayor said that means some quick decisions will have to be made about the relocation of the Heritage Run Tourism Association’s iconic lighthouse visitor information centre. Arrangements have been made for the organization to operate out of the adjacent farmers’ market site for the upcoming tourism season.

“Several months ago, this seemed like it was going to be a dead project because we were over budget by substantial numbers. We’ve been able to work through those numbers and find a way to go forward with it.”
