N.S. fisherman fined $4,500 for Fisheries Act violations
Joel Goodwin of Yarmouth, N.S., has been fined $4,500 for violating the Fisheries Act in NAFO Area 3Ps, located along the province’s south coast, during the 2013 whelk fishery.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announced Thursday Mr. Goodwin was convicted of misreporting fishing activity and exceeding whelk pot limits at provincial court in Grand Bank Mar. 19.
As a further consequence, a vessel monitoring system (VMS) will be installed on any boat operated by Mr. Goodwin for a one-year period with 15-minute interval reporting.
DFO’s standard reporting interval for VMS is hourly.
