N.S. fish­er­man fined $4,500 for Fish­eries Act vi­o­la­tions

Joel Good­win of Yar­mouth, N.S., has been fined $4,500 for vi­o­lat­ing the Fish­eries Act in NAFO Area 3Ps, lo­cated along the prov­ince’s south coast, dur­ing the 2013 whelk fish­ery.

The Depart­ment of Fish­eries and Oceans (DFO) an­nounced Thurs­day Mr. Good­win was con­victed of mis­re­port­ing fish­ing ac­tiv­ity and ex­ceed­ing whelk pot lim­its at provin­cial court in Grand Bank Mar. 19.

As a fur­ther con­se­quence, a ves­sel mon­i­tor­ing sys­tem (VMS) will be in­stalled on any boat op­er­ated by Mr. Good­win for a one-year pe­riod with 15-minute in­ter­val reporting.

DFO’s stan­dard reporting in­ter­val for VMS is hourly.
