St. Lawrence coun­cil held its first meet­ing of the New Year on Tues­day, Jan 9.

Coun­cil ap­proved a mo­tion to nominate the St. Lawrence Li­ons Club for this year’s Canada’s Vol­un­teer Awards.

Coun­cil also ap­proved a do­na­tion of $125 to Jamie Lynn Drake, who is com­pet­ing in the 2017 Miss New­found­land and Labrador Pageant.

Coun­cil adopted a mo­tion for Mayor Paul Pike to sub­mit his name as a rep­re­sen­ta­tive on the Fed­er­a­tion of Canadian Mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties. The FCM is seek­ing mu­nic­i­pal sec­tor rep­re­sen­ta­tives.

Coun­cil has re­ceived a no­tice of clo­sure from L. Gio­vanni Ltd. in re­gards to Sweep­ers Lounge.

Coun­cil is in the process of get­ting es­ti­mates for the cost of a new fire alarm sys­tem for the St. Lawrence Re­cre­ation Cen­tre.

“We need to get on this as quickly as we can,” said Mayor Paul Pike.

“We do have come home year com­ing up- the rec cen­tre is booked ev­ery sin­gle night.”

Coun­cil ap­proved the Town’s 2017 Tax Re­cov­ery Plan.

Coun­cil re­ceived a card and a do­na­tion of $100 from the com­mu­nity sew­ing group, which uses an area in the town hall for their meet­ings. The money will go to­wards the cost of heat and light for the build­ing.

Gene Turpin, who has served with the St. Lawrence Vol­un­teer Fire De­part­ment for 12 and a half years, has stepped down from his role as a fire­fighter as of Jan 1.

Turpin made his in­ten­tions know to coun­cil by way of a let­ter.

Coun­cil said it plans to ac­knowl­edge Turpin for his ser­vice at a fu­ture date.
