St. Lawrence council briefs
St. Lawrence council held its first meeting of the New Year on Tuesday, Jan 9.
Council approved a motion to nominate the St. Lawrence Lions Club for this year’s Canada’s Volunteer Awards.
Council also approved a donation of $125 to Jamie Lynn Drake, who is competing in the 2017 Miss Newfoundland and Labrador Pageant.
Council adopted a motion for Mayor Paul Pike to submit his name as a representative on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. The FCM is seeking municipal sector representatives.
Council has received a notice of closure from L. Giovanni Ltd. in regards to Sweepers Lounge.
Council is in the process of getting estimates for the cost of a new fire alarm system for the St. Lawrence Recreation Centre.
“We need to get on this as quickly as we can,” said Mayor Paul Pike.
“We do have come home year coming up- the rec centre is booked every single night.”
Council approved the Town’s 2017 Tax Recovery Plan.
Council received a card and a donation of $100 from the community sewing group, which uses an area in the town hall for their meetings. The money will go towards the cost of heat and light for the building.
Gene Turpin, who has served with the St. Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department for 12 and a half years, has stepped down from his role as a firefighter as of Jan 1.
Turpin made his intentions know to council by way of a letter.
Council said it plans to acknowledge Turpin for his service at a future date.
