Marystown firefighter wins National Fire Protection Association scholarship

The Southern Gazette - - Editorial - MARYSTOWN, NL.

A Marystown firefighter’s dedication to educating the public about fire safety has earned him a major award.

Justin Bolt of the Marystown Volunteer Fire Department has earned the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Star Scholarship Award.

The NFPA chooses 12 scholarship recipients from Canada and the United States each year.

The award has earned Bolt, chair of the Marystown department’s public relations committee, a trip to Las Vegas, Nev., this June for the NFPA’s annual conference and expo.

“Justin has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment, in conjunction with the Marystown Volunteer Fire Department, to reducing the Town of Marystown’s residents’ risk to fire and related hazards through his publicrelations duties,” said Laura King, NFPA’s Canadian public education representative, in a news release.

Bolt also provides and circulates the NFPA’s materials to fire departments and the general public in his role as the public relations officer for the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services, King noted.

“Justin is truly deserving of this award and we’re thrilled to have him attend this year’s conference.”

Marystown Fire Chief Alex Coady said Bolt is an asset to the department.

“Justin has been an integral part of our public relations in respect to informing the residents of Marystown of fire safety issues and alerts,” Coady said in the press release.

“He has used the NFPA public safety messages to keep our residents informed and updated, as well as promote fire safety in our town.”

Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services president Duane Antle said the organization is proud one of its volunteers has won the Star Scholarship Award.

“Since joining us in 2016, Justin has done a tremendous job for our association and for our membership,” Antle said.

“Education is one of our main pillars and the work that Justin does not only benefits the Association, but benefits the general public through his ability to share the educational materials which are available through the NFPA.”

Star Scholarship Award recipients are selected by NFPA’s regional educational specialists and the Canadian public education representative. They are valued at approximately $2,000.
