Members of the Sunshine Friends Wellness Group in St. Lawrence put their best foot forward last weekend in an effort to help raise funds for mental health care in the area, as well as opening up the conversation of mental health with neighbouring communities.

Although the group raised over $5,300 dollars for mental health initiatives in the area through the walk-a-thon held on Saturday, May 12, event organizer Tracey Slaney said there is more to it than the funds raised.

“It was not about the money,” she said. “It was about making noise, getting people talking and realize that there are avenues for support — there is the walk-in clinic and the mental health crisis line.

“They don’t necessarily have to come to a meeting, we just wanted them to know that there is help out there and they are not alone.”

Slaney is very happy with the way the event turned out.

“Wow, it was an idea that exploded,” she said. “We started with two people, ended with 75.

“The support and awareness that we created for mental health was awesome.”

Walkers started in the community of Point May and the relay continued until they reached St. Lawrence. Right: Over 75 people took part in a walk-a-thon held May 12 in St. Lawrence to help raise awareness of mental health and wellness issues.
