Big turnout for an­nual road race in Gar­nish-French­man’s Cove

GAR­NISH-FRENCH­MAN’S COVE, N.L. — Un­der al­most ideal con­di­tions, 97 run­ners toed the start line June 2 in the 36th run­ning of the VOCM 740 Gar­nishFrench­man’s Cove 10-kilo­me­tre Road Race.

Male di­vi­sion

David Freake of St. John’s took the early lead and main­tained that lead, cross­ing the fin­ish line in first place in a time of 33:30.

In sec­ond place was Tyler Cole, for­merly of Marys­town, now liv­ing in St. John’s, in a time of 34:17.

Third place in the male di­vi­sion went to Dar­ren Jensen of St. John’s in a time of 36:52.

Fe­male di­vi­sion

First place in the fe­male di­vi­sion went to Lisa Collins-Shep­pard of Lamaline in a time of 36:01, over four min­utes ahead of her near­est fe­male com­peti­tor, Janelle Simmons who fin­ished in sec­ond place in a time of 40:41. Janelle is a for­mer resident of Grand Bank now liv­ing in St. John’s.

Lo­cal run­ner, Me­gan Ryan of Marys­town fin­ished third in a time of 43:33.

Age class di­vi­sions

Penin­sula run­ners dom­i­nated the var­i­ous age class di­vi­sions.

Dar­cie Sta­ple­ton of Marys­town won the un­der 19 fe­male cat­e­gory in a time of 49:40, while Me­gan Ryan, also of Marys­town, took first place in the 20-29 fe­male di­vi­sion.

Michelle Strang of Marys­town was first in the 40-49 age class in a time of 45:57 while Joan Pope of Grand Bank took first place in the 70+ cat­e­gory in a time of 1:04:41.

Terry Flem­ming of Lamaline was first in the male 50-59 cat­e­gory.

Race con­ven­ers Ly­man Keep­ing and Gor­don Brock­erville thanked the spon­sors for con­tin­u­ing to sup­port this race as well as all the vol­un­teers who of their time to help make the race a suc­cess.
