Welcome to Kin Corner

Serving the community’s greatest needs

The Southern Gazette - - Front Page - BY PATSY INKPEN MARYSTOWN, N.L.

In November members of the Marystown Kinette Club participated in a humbling experience by helping out our fellow Kin in St. John’s.

We helped prepare and serve a Saturday brunch for approximately 170 people at the Gathering Place, a service centre committed to building community, promoting equality and providing nourishment.

The programs and services of the Gathering Place are offered primarily to people who are homeless or live in less than desirable housing conditions, people who are often unemployed and to people who do not have adequate social supports at this time in their lives. Guests are male and female, younger and older, street people, and people falling through the cracks. The guests of the Gathering Place come from all over Newfoundland and Labrador.

Our fundraising for the Children’s Wish Foundation (as the Burin Peninsula sub-chapter) is continuing, and we were pleased to present a $6,005 donation to Dave Walsh at the Children’s Wish NL office.

Since making this presentation, we also received a $1,000 donation from Alice Whitten in memory of her mother Veronica Dimmer. A big thank you to Whitten and her contributors.

We held our second Coats for Families collection on Dec. 1. The goal of this project is to provide winter coats for families in need (infants to adult) at no cost to the recipients. We would like to thank all those who made this project a success again this year, with 240 coats collected, as well as donations of mittens, hats and scarves.

Special appreciation to the following for their help: Relic Riders for dropping by with their contribution of coats, the Town of Marystown for use of the building on Saturday, the Marystown Fire Department, Canada Post Marystown, Soanya and Ronnie from the Smallwood Crescent Community Center and the Salvation Army who will ensure the coats go to those in need free of charge. And of course the public for the generosity and support of the project.

On behalf of our club we would like to extend a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year to all, and thank you for supporting our fund raising efforts.

If you are looking for a way to make a difference in your community, email pat_ink@ hotmail.com or leave a message in our Facebook group: Marystown Kinette Club. New members are always welcome.
