Great Plains College extends scholarship deadline to June 30

- SUBMITTED

Great Plains College is pleased to announce its Entrance Scholarship deadline has been extended to June 30. Students are automatically considered for an Entrance Scholarship of $500 to $5,000 when they apply to a full-time student loan-eligible program before the June 30 deadline (for September entry programs).

The extended deadline is a result of higher than expected support from the college’s donors and the provincial government’s Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship funding.

“The generosity of our donors, paired with the continued support from the Government of Saskatchewan has left our scholarship program more robust than we had planned for this year,” said Carrie Voysey, director of communications and development at Great Plains College. “We’re happy to extend the opportunity for scholarships to even more students as costs of post-secondary education continue to rise.”

Full-time scholarship-eligible programs with seats still available include: Administrative Assistant, Business (certificate and diploma), Carpentry and Production Line Welding, Certificate in Health, Safety and Environmental Processes, Diploma in Safety, Health and Environmental Management, Electrician, Power Engineering, University, Welding and Youth Care Worker.

Great Plains College is also proud to offer an Early Entrance Award. Grade 11 students with at least a 70 per cent average are eligible for the award of $1,000 when they apply to any full-time student loan-eligible program before June 30.

“We encourage anyone who may have missed the original April 30 deadline, or who has been considering applying to a full-time program to do so before June 30 to ensure they are considered for an Entrance Scholarship or an Early Entrance Award,” added Voysey.

The college boasts one of the most competitive scholarship programs among regional colleges in the province. Since 2009, more than $2 million has been distributed to students enrolled in full-time student loan-eligible programs, including approximately $182,000 in the 2017-18 academic year.

The Cross Country Mountain Bike Trail which will be utilized during the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games will begin to see additional progress this weekend.

One of the initial work projects at the trail, which is being constructed in the coulee area directly south of the Highland Subdivision, will occur this weekend.

Course designers Matt Hadley (Mcelhanney Consulting Services Ltd.) and Alex Man will be in Swift Current Friday to lead a Trail Building Workshop. This event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the WCSG Games office (751 Lorne St. W.).

Then on Saturday a building session will occur from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Highland Coulee. Participants will be taught tool safety, tool uses, and how to read the trail layout before work begins.

The Games Committee will also look to the community to be the stewards of this project as construction moves ahead, with the hope that – under the watchful eyes of residents – no damage comes to the area during the pinning and construction process.

Individuals with questions and/or concerns about the project are encouraged to contact the Games Office at 306-778-1678, by email at info@2019wcsg.ca. Visit www.2019wcsg.ca today to learn more about the Games and to become a Volunteer.
