Former 57 selected in MLB Draft

Former Swift Current 57’s pitcher Sean Chandler was selected in the Major League Baseball Draft last week. The 6’5’’ righthanded pitcher was taken in the sixth round, 179th overall, by the Texas Rangers.

The Bellevue, NE product was a part of the 2017 57’s team that won the Western Major Baseball League championship.

He appeared in 16 games as a reliever and finished with a 4-0 record. Chandler pitched in 13 regular season games with a 1.05 earned run average with 22 strikeouts and only seven hits allowed over 17 innings. He was even more dominant during two postseason appearances when he did not allow an earned run over 8.2 innings while striking out 13 and only walking two with a 2-0 record.

Chandler had a spectacular season with the Iowa Western Community College Reivers with an 11-0 record and a 1.34 ERA. The Sophomore pitcher struck out 123 batters over 74 innings for an average of 14.96 strikeouts per nine innings and only walked 20 batters. He held opposition batters to a .129 batting average this season.

Chandler was previously drafted in the 32nd round by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2015, but opted to go to school instead.
