Harvest moving quickly in the Southwest

The Southwest Booster - - FRONT PAGE - HARVEST 2018

Harvest progress in the Southwest jumped from 10 per cent completed to 31 per cent according to the Saskatchewan Agriculture Crop Report for the period of August 14 to 20.

The jump of 21 per cent of harvest work in a single week pushed the region well ahead of the five-year average of 14 per cent completed during this time of the year. Plus, an additional 17 per cent of crops are swathed or ready to straightcut.

The impact on yields after the lack of moisture during the growing season is now becoming more evident.

“Reported yields so far vary greatly across the region, all depending on how much moisture was received over the growing season. Overall, yields range from about average to well below average; however, some reporters have indicated that yields are much better than expected for crops such as pulses,” the Crop Report in the Southwest states.

The prolonged lack of of moisture, combined with warm temperatures has helped crops to ripen quickly. However, many pastures and hay fields remain in need of significant rainfall to help them record. Topsoil moisture conditions are deteriorating rapidly.

A full 83 per cent of Southwest pastures are rated in the poor to very poor range, with 54 per cent very poor, and 29 per cent poor. Only 15 per cent are rated fair, and two per cent fall into the good category.

Cropland topsoil moisture conditions are ranked as 58 per cent very short, and 36 per cent short, with only six per cent receiving an adequate grading.

Saskatchewan wide, 16 per cent of the 2018 crop is in the bin, slightly ahead of the 14 per cent harvested one year ago, but ahead of the five-year average of seven per cent.
