Time for Vitamin D
HEALTH AT ANY SIZE
The end of summer and sunshine means we all need to take a vitamin D supplement. Why? Because vitamin D plays an important role in bone health.
Without the ‘sunshine’ vitamin, our bodies can’t absorb calcium, which can lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Low levels of vitamin D can also help to prevent diseases (such as breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, respiratory infections such as pneumonia, TB, bronchiolitis and cardio vascular disease).
Several new studies published in the Journal of Internal Medicine, found there is a link between persons with low levels of vitamin D and increased risk of contracting COVID19.
The recommended dosage for adults is 600-800 IU of vitamin D everyday but not to exceed 4,000 IU per day.
Some foods that contain vitamin D include fatty fish (salmon, sardines, trout), fortified milk and milk alternatives, eggs, cod liver oil, mushrooms, fortified orange juice, yogurt and beef or calf liver
