Mayor and MP present cer­tifi­cates of achieve­ments to many

Me­lanie Morel re­ceives cer­tifi­cates of achieve­ment from Mayor Dan Marchisella and MP Carol Hughes at this year’s El­liot Lake Mayor Levee.

The 2019 El­liot Lake Mayor’s New Year’s Levee saw 33 res­i­dents, many of them young, hon­oured for their achieve­ments in 2018.

El­liot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella and Al­go­ma­man­i­toulin-ka­puskas­ing MP Carol Hughes pre­sented cer­tifi­cates of achieve­ment to the re­cip­i­ents.

Mar­tial arts

A num­ber of the re­cip­i­ents won awards in mar­tial arts tour­na­ments in var­i­ous lo­ca­tions last year.

• Paige Law­son re­ceived two sil­ver in forms, two bronze in spar­ring and two sil­ver in weapons, as well as two fifth place fin­ishes in self de­fense. She also help other in her spare time.

• Stephanie Jac­ques re­ceived three sil­ver in forms, one gold and two sil­ver in spar­ring, two bronze in self de­fense and two fourth place fin­ishes in weapons. She was also in­volved in the sum­mer fun pro­gram where she demon­strated mar­tial arts to the chil­dren in the sum­mer day pro­gram.

• Tate Law­son re­ceived two bronze in forms, two golds in self de­fense and two bronze in weapons.

• Gra­cie Sprague re­ceived three golds and one fourth in forms, sil­ver in spar­ring, three sil­ver in self de­fense and three golds and one fourth in weapons.

• Van­der Lav­i­gne took fourth in forms, fourth in self de­fense and bronze in weapons.

• Dana Jac­ques won sil­ver in forms, sil­ver in spar­ring, bronze in self de­fense and a sil­ver in weapons.

• Laura Dun­lap is a mar­tial arts stu­dent loves to help oth­ers in the early class. Dur­ing the sum­mer she vol­un­teered at the El­liot Lake Sum­mer Fun Pro­gram at the Rio Den to help demon­strate to chil­dren in the pro­gram.

• Manon Rouil­lard is a mar­tial arts stu­dent who also loves to help oth­ers.

• Mia Sheare is a mar­tial arts stu­dent who loves to help oth­ers and of­ten comes in early to help with ju­nior stu­dents.

Emma Faren­zena is a two time grand cham­pion. She also three gold and two bronze in forms, three gold in spar­ring, two gold in self de­fense and a gold in weapons.

Bowl­ing

• Brit­tany Drakes-kalaw com­peted at the pro­vin­cial 5-pin bowl­ing cham­pi­onships held the week of 12, May 2018 in Char­lot­te­town, Prince Ed­ward Is­land where she place se­cond place in the in­di­vid­ual cat­e­gory re­ceiv­ing a sil­ver.

• Christo­pher May­berry also com­peted at the pro­vin­cial 5 pin bowl­ing cham­pi­onships held the week of 12 May 12, in Char­lot­te­town, P.E.I. where he re­ceived an hon­ourable men­tion.

Mar­tial arts tour­na­ments

• James Terry com­peted at the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship on March 24 in El­liot Lake and won gold in self de­fense, gold in spar­ring and fourth in forms. He also at­tended WKC re­gional qual­i­fier on April 28 in Sault Ste. Marie where he won gold in forms, gold in spar­ring and a sil­ver in self de­fense.

• Mar­cus White com­peted at the WKC re­gional qual­i­fier on April 28in SSM re­ceiv­ing a sil­ver in forms and sil­ver in spar­ring. He also at­tended the Soo Dan Hap­kido Open Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship On Oct. 13 in SSM re­ceiv­ing gold in spar­ring, sil­ver in forms and sil­ver in high/long fall.

• Is­abelle Roy Van­leaken com­peted at the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship on March 24 in El­liot Lake and won a gold in team forms and sil­ver in forms. Is­abelle also at­tended the WKC re­gional qual­i­fier on April 28 win­ning a gold in forms and bronze in weapons.

• Brett Ma­honey at­tended the Pin­der’s Mar­tial Arts Open Cham­pi­onship on June 2 in SSM re­ceiv­ing gold in spar­ring, bronze in forms and bronze in self de­fense. Brett also par­tic­i­pated in the Soo Dan Hap­kido Open Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship on Oct. 13 in SSM re­ceiv­ing gold in spar­ring, bronze in forms, bronze in self de­fense and bronze in break­ing.

• Tris­tan Arnold com­peted at the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship March 24 and won a sil­ver in self de­fense.

• Tommy Pa­ton also com­peted at the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship March 24 win­ning gold in spar­ring.

• Marni Kay par­tic­i­pated in the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship March 24 re­ceiv­ing a sil­ver in forms.

• Michelle Barry com­peted at the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship March 24 re­ceiv­ing a sil­ver in forms.

• Jess­lyn Barry par­tic­i­pated in the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship March 24 re­ceiv­ing a sil­ver in spar­ring.

• Paige Patch­ett com­peted at the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship March 24 and won bronze in spar­ring.

• Cris­tian Owl com­peted at the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship March 24and won gold in spar­ring.

• Alexis Macgil­livray par­tic­i­pated in the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship March 24 win­ning a bronze in self de­fense.

Lu­cas also at­tended the Pin­der’s Mar­tial Arts Open Cham­pi­onship and won gold in self de­fense, sil­ver in spar­ring and bronze in forms.lu­cas also com­peted at the Soo Dan Hap­kido Open Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship and won gold in pre­ci­sion kick­ing, gold in break­ing, gold in high/long and bronze in forms.

• Brooke­lynn Barry com­peted at the Pin­der’s Mar­tial Arts Open Cham- pi­o­nship where she was awarded a gold in forms, bronze in weapons, gold in self de­fense, as well as a gold in spar­ring. Brooke­lynn was also awarded grand cham­pion.brooke­lynn also com­peted at the Cana­dian Bu­doka Karate Cham­pi­onship in Sud­bury May 5 win­ning sil­ver in forms, gold in weapons, gold in spar­ring and fourth in self de­fense. At the WKC na­tion­als held in Ot­tawa May 18 she was awarded a sil­ver in forms and a fourth in weapons.

• Me­lanie Morel par­tic­i­pated in the WKC qual­i­fier in SSM April 28 re­ceiv­ing sil­ver in forms, gold in weapons, gold in spar­ring, as well as grand cham­pion.

• Kal­lam Thomp­son com­peted at the North­ern On­tario Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship March 24 win­ning bronze in self de­fense. Kal­lam also at­tended the WKC re­gional qual­i­fier April 28 re­ceiv­ing a sil­ver in forms and sil­ver in self de­fense. He also at­tended Soo Dan Hap­kido Open Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship Oct. 13 and won sil­ver in forms and sil­ver in self de­fense.

• Cam­ryn Hen­nessey at­tended the Soo Dan Hap­kido Open Mar­tial Arts Cham­pi­onship Oct. 13th and won a gold in self de­fense, bronze in spar­ring and bronze in break­ing.

Life saver

Marc Ber­natchez did a heroic deed when he as­sisted with the re­trieval of a fish­er­man who had tipped his ca­noe on Mc­carthy Lake while vis­it­ing El­liot Lake. Ber­natchez was in the right place at the right time. He was as­sisted by his son on Matthew.
