Mother’s Day medal haul for local rowers

- Standard Staff

Local schools won 49 medals at the recent 43rd Annual Mother’s Day Regatta in St. Catharines.

Governor Simcoe and Denis Morris lead the local schools with seven medals each.

There were 53 schools and 352 entries in the regatta which had a one-hour delay because of foggy conditions.

The regatta’s tradition is that mothers of the winning crews present the medals to their winning rowers and crews wear homemade shirts in tribute of mom and present their mothers with flowers back at the boat house.

“It’s a nice way to say sorry for making us late for Mother’s Day dinner again,” said Michelle Kerr, president of the St. Catharines Rowing Club.

Crews not travelling to Philadelphia this weekend for the Stotesbury Cup will likely race in the South Niagara Invitational Regatta.
