The owners of the venerable Frado’s Dining Lounge in St. Catharines are passing the torch after 49 years.

“It’s time to move on,” said Dean Frado, who co-owns the 535 Queenston St. restaurant with his mother Mary. “The restaurant has been here since 1966 and I have worked here over 30 years myself.”

“My mom wants to retire and I am going to move on to something else.”

The restaurant, at the Homer Bridge north of Lock 3, has its last day on Aug. 25.

Frado said new owners are closing the facility for renovations, with a new restaurant to open some time later.

Frado’s was founded by Dean’s father Tullio and brothers Fred and Vito.

While it has served as a nightclub and music venue in the past, it’s especially known for its dishes that include traditional pasta and other Italian cuisine.

“We’ve had our ups and downs as a club and had live entertainment and a DJ for many years,” Dean said. “We still have a DJ Friday nights and a jazz band that appeared once a month.”

Dean said the owners and staff want to thank loyal customers.

“We want to express how much we enjoyed serving them,” he said. “It’s been an amazing run for us.

“And we’ve had many longterm staff that have become personal friends and I want to thank them all as well.”

Mary Frado says the longevity of the establishment has given it a unique local status among restaurants.

“We’re almost a legend, you know, but it was getting to the point we needed to retire and move on,” she said. “So it’s going to someone who’ll take over and do a very good job.”

Brock Office Automation at 23 Nihan Dr. in St. Catharines marked its 25th year last month.

The business is owned and operated by Mike Gammon and serves small- to medium-sized businesses with office automation solutions.

It was originally called Brock Copier Co. and founded in 1990 in the Brock Business Park, near Brock University.
