Jays acquire lefty Liriano;Yanks deal Beltran to Rangers

TORONTO — Left-handed pitcher Francisco Liriano was acquired by the Blue Jays in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday in exchange for right-hander Drew Hutchison.

Two prospects were also involved in the deal, but Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins could not confirm their names before the Pittsburgh organizati­on contacted all the players involved.

Liriano has a 6-11 record this season in 21 starts with a 5.46 earnedrun average and 116 strikeouts this season. The best season of Liriano’s 11-year career came with Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin as his primary backstop.

Liriano had a 16-8 record with a 3.02 ERA and 162 Ks in 2013 with Martin as his battery-mate for the Pirates.

Hutchison has one win in 12.2 innings pitched as both a starter and reliever for Toronto this season. He has a 4.97 ERA with 12 strikeouts.

In other deals on Monday, Toronto acquired right-handed pitcher Scott Feldman from the Houston Astros in exchange for pitching prospect Gaudalupe Chavez. Shortly after that, the Blue Jays got righty Mike Bolsinger from the Los Angeles Dodgers for reliever Jesse Chavez and cash considerat­ions.

Also Monday, the Yankees stepped uptheirreb­uilding,tradingout­fielder Carlos Beltran to the AL West-leading Texas Rangers for right-hander Dillon Tate, the fourth overall pick in the 2015 amateur draft, and two other pitching prospects.

The Rangers also acquired twotime All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy and closer Jeremy Jeffress from the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade for two former first-round picks.

Also, the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians acquired outfielder Brandon Guyer from Tampa Bay for two minor leaguers.

The Boston Red Sox acquired left-handed reliever Fernando Abad from the Minnesota Twins for minor league pitcher Pat Light.

Abad has a 2.65 ERA in 39 appearance­s for the Twins, his first season with the club.

The NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs added more depth to their bullpen, acquiring right-hander Joe Smith from the Los Angeles Angels just before the trade deadline. Associated Press
