Thorold husband convicted of assault

-

The relationship is over for a Thorold man with “a significant drug addiction” who was involved in a domestic dispute. Elijah Thomson, who pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with a weapon during an earlier court appearance, received a suspended sentence and was placed on probation for 18 months following his appearance Friday in the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines. Assistant Crown attorney Gabriele Settimi said the victim, who was sitting in the courtroom, wants the relationship to be over and she was concerned that once Thomson was released from custody he would get back into the drug culture. The weapon that was used during the assault involved a brick that was thrown at the victim, but did not strike her. A nearby plastic child’s wagon ended up hitting a motor vehicle and caused some damage. Defence lawyer Donald Wolfe said his client, who had 31 days of pretrial credit, was prepared to abstain from alcohol. Judge Ann Watson said Thomson, who had no previous criminal record, committed some breaches after he was charged and she was concerned about further breaches. The judge said Family and Children Services will be involved regarding future contact with family members. Terms of the 18-month probation include no contact with the victim, no weapons for five years, no consumption of drugs or alcohol, and attend for counselling relating to domestic violence. Thomson asked to be released from custody at the courthouse instead of having to return to the detention centre in Thorold.
