Divok on par in final stop on Niagara Men’s Tour

- BILL POTRECZ

Derek Divok of Hunters Point carded an even par 72 to capture top spot on the final stop of the Niagara Men’s Golf Tour Sunday at Hunters Pointe.

Divok, who fired a 35 on the front nine and 37 on the final nine holes, edged out Kham Vong of Rockway Vineyards by one stroke.

“The conditions were wet and very windy so I thought I played well under the circumstances,” Divok said. “I missed a lot of birdie putts but made some key par saves after some errant tee shots.”

Divok, a 56-year-old sales consultant for Ingersoll Cutting Tools out of Rockford, Ill., is in his fifth year on tour.

“It was an honour to win an event on the tour as there are a lot of good players on tour,” he said. “I would encourage any decent player to try and qualify for the tour next year, as the guys running it are doing a great job selecting the courses, arranging for sponsors and are giving the entry fee back in prize. It’s a lot of fun and you get to golf with guys you probably would not have, except for the tour. For me it’s awesome to see these young guns hit the ball. I only wish I had their length.”

Rounding out the top five were Jim Briggs of Fox Run (74) while public player Mike Claxton, Aaron Black of Lookout Point, Stew McEachern of Hunters Pointe and Eric Maclean of St. Catharines all tied at 76.

Vong won the overall points championship at 806.67 followed by Ben Kenel of Dundas Valley at 689.67, Briggs 626.17, Ryan Dyck of Lookout Point 616 and Divok 600.87.

Senior Men’s Championship

Joe Miszk of Lookout Point finished in a tie for fifth place at the Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Championship at The Marshes Golf Club with a total of 22 over three rounds.

Jim Briggs of Peninsula Lakes finished tied for eighth at 225.

They are the only two local golfers who qualified the 2016 Senior Men’s Golf Championship at Grand Niagara.

Golf Canada is holding their final qualifier on Sunday, Sept, 4 at Hunters Pointe.
