Canada’s favourite songs coming to Niagara

- LAURA BARTON

For its second show of the 201718 season, Welland-Port Colborne Concert Association is featuring some of Canada’s favourite songs, with The Great Canadian Songbook.

The show — featuring performers Ken Lavigne, Tiller’s Folly and Diyet — comes to the J.W. Ennis Auditorium at Welland Centennial Secondary School on Saturday.

“First and foremost, (audiences) can expect spectacular music that they’ve probably grown up with,” Lavigne said.

He said the show highlights a lot of music from big name performers in the 1960s and ’70s, when Canada was really starting to make its mark in the music scene. The show doesn’t feature only tunes from those decades, however. There’s an array of songs and artists covered, including the likes of Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Barenaked Ladies and Blue Rodeo.

Lavigne and the other two groups got to pick the music for the show, which Lavigne said was no easy feat. Not only did they each have artists they very much liked, but they made sure to cover as many as the favourites as possible.

He said a lot of it was gut instinct and recognizing what has been popular with audiences in other performances. In some instances, he said, they’ve created medleys because there were so many great tracks to choose from.

“It’s all done with a lot of integrity and style,” he said.

Audiences so far are loving the show, he said. Singing and clapping along, cheering and asking for encores are regular occurrences with audiences.

He’s hoping people who come to the show in Welland will have an equally good time. He said he and the performers are looking forward to being in Welland, adding he came to the city a few years ago to perform as well and remembers having a great time.

Tickets are available for the 7:30 p.m. show by visiting wellandportcolborneconcert.org or by calling 905-788-1648. Membership information to have the opportunity to see each of the concert association’s shows is also available through the website and phone number.
