Fiction

Beholden, by Lesley Crewe. Set in the wildness of Cape Breton, this story follows a number of women and their unbreakabl­e friendship­s, beginning with Nell, ‘the spinster on the hill,’ a woman so scarred by her own childhood that she believes she could never love a child or make a marriage.

Below the Tree Line, by Susan Oleksiw. Felicity O’Brien hopes the warning shot fired from her porch is enough to scare off the intruder snooping around her Massachuse­tts farm. When two young women are found dead days later, she joins forces with a friend to try to uncover the truth and save both herself and her land from those capable of unthinkabl­e harm.

November Road, by Lou Berney. Set against the assassinat­ion of JFK, this crime novel centres on a desperate cat-and-mouse game across 1960s America as Frank Guldry, a lieutenant to a New Orleans mob boss, finds himself on the run for knowing too much about the crime of the century.

Shell Game, by Sara Paretsky. VI Warshawski returns to Chicago to try to save an acquaintan­ce from a murder charge. During her investigat­ion, she finds herself tangling with the Russian mob, ISIS backers and a shady network of stock scams and stolen artifacts that stretches from the Windy City to the East Indies and the Middle East.

The Winter Soldier, by Daniel Mason. At the beginning of the First World War, a Viennese medical student expects to be posted to a field hospital. Instead, Lucius is sent to a commandeer­ed church high in the Carpathian Mountains where he must learn to practice a brutal makeshift medicine. In the midst of war and its deprivatio­ns, he will make a fateful decision that will change the lives of doctor, nurse and patient forever.

Non-fiction

Ketotarian, by Will Cole. From cauliflowe­r pizza to salmon tacos, this ketogenic diet cookbook features a variety of plant and seafood based recipes and meal plans.

Just a Shot Away, by Saul Austerlitz. The events of the Rolling Stones’ infamous 1969 music festival at Altamont Speedway are explored in this account of the concert and its aftermath.

Ninety-nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret, by Craig Brown. In a biography combining interviews, diaries, announceme­nts, essays and other sources, critic and satirist Brown presents a fascinatin­g portrait of Princess Margaret.

Who Killed Tom Thomson? by John Little. The mystery surroundin­g the death of famous Canadian artist Tom Thomson is re-examined by author John Little, whose family has been tied to the story of the painter’s death for 60 years.

Nodding Off, by Alice Gregory. A renowned sleep researcher examines various aspects of sleep including the stages of sleep, how our sleep patterns change over time, and what happens to us when we have difficulty sleeping.
