- BERND FRANKE

Precipitation wasn’t limited to the wet stuff pouring down from the sky Thursday night in Thorold.

Inside Frank Doherty Arena, it was raining rubber; specifically, lots and lots and lots of hard rubber pucks. There were more than enough this way and that to shake two well-used goalie sticks at.

According to a boxscore posted on the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s stats website, the host Thorold Blackhawks and the Lockport Regals combined for nearly 100 shots on net in a 3-3 tie in double overtime.

Lockport outshot Thorold 49-48

and finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play. The ’Hawks were 0-for-1 with a man advantage.

Devon Thibodeau and Brendan Charlton put Thorold up 2-0 before goals from Alexis Stinis, with two; and Anthony Trigillio put Regals in the lead.

Lockport was 3:02 away from winning in regulation when Thibodeau forced overtime with his second goal of the game.

The teams took turns controlling the flow in overtime. After the Blackhawks outshot Lockport 4-1 in the first extra frame, the Regals outshot their hosts 5-2 the rest of the way.

Each overtime period is five minutes in the GOJHL.

Chase Clark and Anthony Tremonte went the distance between the pipes for Lockport and Thorold, respectively.

The Blackhawks improved their record to 5-8-1-0, the Regals to 1-14-1.

Thorold opened head-to-head play against the league’s only U.S. team with a 4-2 win in the season opener at home and an 8-2 victory two weeks ago in western New York

Thorold was back on the ice Friday visiting the St. Catharines Falcons, 10-3-0-1. Last night’s other action in the Golden Horseshoe Conference has the Niagara Falls Canucks, 14-1, home to the Pelham Panthers, 10-6-0-1.

Results of last night ’s game were not available at press time, but summaries are posted online at stcatharinesstandard.ca, niagarafallsreview.ca and wellandtribune.ca.

Lockport is off until Wednesday when it hosts Pelham.

Shots on goal were 41-32 in favour of the RiverHawks. Both teams went 1-for-2 on the power play.

Hespeler, 3-11-1-1, rebounded from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime.
