Blackhawks tie Lockport, ’Hawks win in overtime
Precipitation wasn’t limited to the wet stuff pouring down from the sky Thursday night in Thorold.
Inside Frank Doherty Arena, it was raining rubber; specifically, lots and lots and lots of hard rubber pucks. There were more than enough this way and that to shake two well-used goalie sticks at.
According to a boxscore posted on the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s stats website, the host Thorold Blackhawks and the Lockport Regals combined for nearly 100 shots on net in a 3-3 tie in double overtime.
Lockport outshot Thorold 49-48
and finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play. The ’Hawks were 0-for-1 with a man advantage.
Devon Thibodeau and Brendan Charlton put Thorold up 2-0 before goals from Alexis Stinis, with two; and Anthony Trigillio put Regals in the lead.
Lockport was 3:02 away from winning in regulation when Thibodeau forced overtime with his second goal of the game.
The teams took turns controlling the flow in overtime. After the Blackhawks outshot Lockport 4-1 in the first extra frame, the Regals outshot their hosts 5-2 the rest of the way.
Each overtime period is five minutes in the GOJHL.
Chase Clark and Anthony Tremonte went the distance between the pipes for Lockport and Thorold, respectively.
The Blackhawks improved their record to 5-8-1-0, the Regals to 1-14-1.
Thorold opened head-to-head play against the league’s only U.S. team with a 4-2 win in the season opener at home and an 8-2 victory two weeks ago in western New York
Thorold was back on the ice Friday visiting the St. Catharines Falcons, 10-3-0-1. Last night’s other action in the Golden Horseshoe Conference has the Niagara Falls Canucks, 14-1, home to the Pelham Panthers, 10-6-0-1.

Lockport is off until Wednesday when it hosts Pelham.
RiverHawks 4, Shamrocks 3 OT
At Niagara Falls, Josh Urbshott’s goal two minutes into overtime gave the host RiverHawks a victory over Hespeler. Derek Pymont, just 29 seconds into the opening period, Dante Massi, Tyler Seguin scored in regulation for Niagara, 8-6, in Thursday night’s Provincial Junior Hockey League game at Gale Centre.
Shots on goal were 41-32 in favour of the RiverHawks. Both teams went 1-for-2 on the power play.
Hespeler, 3-11-1-1, rebounded from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime.
“I think we fell asleep a few times during the game, but we finished strong and found a way to win,” RiverHawks head coach Tim Barath said.
“We have two more big games this weekend and we need to play a full 60 minutes to be successful.”
Niagara visited the Grimsby Peach Kings, 12-1-1-0, Friday night and travel to play the Port Dover Sailors 2 p.m. Sunday.
Next RiverHawks’ home game is 7:30 p.m. Thursday versus the Hagersville Hawks.
